How much does it cost to develop a metaverse game?
In the world of online gaming, there are three major types of online game: MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing games), MUDs (multi-user dungeons), and MU*s (multi-user domains). Each one has its own unique set of rules and characteristics that make it unique from the others. However, in their inception, each type of game had to be developed from scratch — you couldn’t just buy one or have it outsourced to someone else. That’s where the term from scratch comes from!
What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is a shared virtual space created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet. In order to create such an expansive platform from scratch there are many different aspects that need to be taken into consideration. Development time for games like Mateverse can take over three years. Cost for development starts at about $100K for programmers with only 5 years experience.
What costs will I encounter when creating a digital world?
The costs of digital world creation are based on what you need and what you can do yourself. For example, Mateverse is one service that offers development, integration, monetization and marketing for a low monthly fee. These services can also be in tandem with freelance work or have features that are self-built like Lumberyard from Amazon Web Services. The basic cost will depend on the amount of time and effort you're willing to put into the process.
Tools I’ve used.
This is going to depend on the scope of your project. Mateverse costs $20,000 up front and up to $40,000 a month for the developers team which means you could end up spending anywhere from $60,000 to $120,000 or more. Plus you'll need another few hundred thousand dollars just in development costs. This doesn't include marketing which can easily add up as well as shipping and other operational costs.
The Road Ahead (coming soon)
If you're developing your own virtual world, you'll have to spend time coming up with the concept and design of the world before you can start on building. Even if you're using a ready-made system like Second Life, there are many expenses that need to be accounted for. Fortunately, there are more and more services emerging all the time that will take care of these processes for you. If you need help designing your own custom world from scratch, there's an extra charge for content design.
